How cheese and crackers makes a nice stopping point on a campout once the tents are up and gear is in place.

It seems like a simple thing but on most campouts I get a Hormel plate of cheese and crackers. It costs about $12 and contains the normal stuff, couple of types of cheese, crackers and peperoni.

I enjoy having this little snack on the camping trips to share with the other adults in attendance, and sometimes if they beg, with the boys.

When we go out camping during most of the year we get to our meeting place to load up at about 6:30, and if all goes well we are on our way between 6:45 and 7pm. Here in the northeast that means we are getting to our location at dusk or dark during most of the year. And because of this it’s not too conducive to setting up a campfire or some other group based activity. It’s already been a long day, and even if it’s 9pm, it feels like it’s midnight because of the darkness.

The cheese and crackers makes a nice stopping point to the setup process once all the cars are emptied, tents are up and gear is in place.ion

It also makes for a nice rally point to take a few minutes to spend some time with the other leaders and see how things are going.

Some of my most memorable moments from camping trips are sitting around the tray of snacks and just taking a few minutes to relax and enjoy the fellowship.

It’s also a nice milestone if the budget for the trip’s food swings my way, as I mentioned in previous videos, that I have money left over from purchasing the adult food, that I can get my favorite snack. Although I have been known to kick in the extra dollars if the fund don’t go my way.

I also have been known to get the platter for camping trips with the family, or even when going out to camp for OA service or help staff an event, although if  I’m by myself I will get the smaller version to pack along. But this is what works for us.

Take what you like and leave the rest, and as we say in Woodbadge, feedback is a gift, leave yours below in the comments, with the hope we can all learn together.

I’m Scoutmaster Dave, and this was all about the cheese and crackers.
